On this day September 22nd 1776 Captain Nathan Hale was hanged as a spy. Hale was a school teacher in New London Connecticut and a Yale graduate, when shots rang out in Lexington and Concord Massachusetts. Hale joined the Connecticut Militia and headed to Boston. He fought at Bunker/Breeds Hill. Not long after he was asked to be part of Washington's Culper Spy Ring. To row his boat from the Connecticut coast to Long Island New York, no easy task. He was to enter British encampments as a Tory and observe British troop movement. On the 21st of September he was preparing to row back to Connecticut and was recognized by a Tory relative of his. He was arrested and hanged the next day. Some doubt he actually said his famous last words but supposedly they were documented by a British officer, “I only regret that I have but one life to give for my country.”

Captain Nathan Hale was 21 years old. A true American Hero.
